FSU 2013 Trends Conference Recap

A capacity crowd of nearly 600 attended the 19th annual FSU Real Estate Trends Conference, November 14 & 15, 2013. The opening reception/dinner featured comments from Alan Simpson, former Senator of Wyoming. With quick wit and a straightforward style, Simpson tackled the most controversial of topics on the national agenda – bringing both honesty and sensible solutions to the table to move the country forward in these most uncertain of political times. Friday sessions included “The FSU Shark Tank” where industry leaders vetted their investment decisions, revealed their approach to the grueling approval process, and evaluated the risks inherent in today’s investment environment. Jon Gray, Global Head of Real Estate at Blackstone, provided his unique insights to the global market. Since joining Blackstone in 1992, Mr. Gray has helped build the largest real estate platform in the world with more than $50 billion in investor capital under management (major holdings include Hilton Worldwide, Equity Office Properties, Brixmor shopping centers and London’s Broadgate office complex). Concurrent breakout sessions looked to identify opportunities and evaluate emerging conditions in the housing, retail, office, industrial and hospitality sectors. The conference closed with comments from Ethan Penner, Managing Partner at Monday Capital Partners, the featured lunch speaker. Mr. Penner has enjoyed a highly distinguished 30-year career in real estate finance and investments, notably as the founder and CEO of Capital America, a subsidiary of Nomura Securities.
